In Opening Night willen we in spel en schriftuur onderzoeken hoe we op sc\u00e8ne
Grote Gevoelens kunnen representeren, een zoektocht die we ‘De Nieuwe Emotionaliteit’ noemen. Lukt het ons om op toneel overtuigender gevoelens te tonen dan in de
emotioneel gesatureerde en geformatteerde samenleving en beeldcultuur? We onderzoeken of het streven naar grootse gebaren –in de kunst, in het leven – nog van deze tijd zijn. Hoe we
op een overtuigende, wanhopige manier barok kunnen zijn, en toch geloofwaardig.
Het vertrekpunt van deze productie vormt het uitzonderlijke filmwerk van John Cassavetes en het acteerwerk van zijn vrouw Gena Rowlands. Opening Night laat zich inspireren door
hun kunde om menselijke relaties en emotionele uitzonderingstoestanden met een
zeldzame gevoeligheid te laten zien, hun bekwaamheid om voor de camera kwetsbaarheid te vinden die bijna shockerend is omdat je het nauwelijks nog ziet. Even geestig als zuiverend, even spontaan als geregisseerd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zoals Olga (2013) een nieuwe Tsjechov is, wordt Opening Night een nieuwe
Cassavetes: menselijke intriges – veel duo’s, trio’s, kwartetten en tutti’s –, onuitgesproken kwetsuren, veel liefde, en humor. Opening Night wordt barok, een filmisch spel, een flirt met pathetiek en sentimentaliteit.
